Everything else on this site rests on this pillar. Your neurotransmitters are built from amino acids, your energy is made in mitochondria, and peptides — the molecules people get most excited about — are simply short chains of the same building blocks.

Why it changes how you feel

Dopamine is made from tyrosine and serotonin from tryptophan, both of which come from dietary protein. When protein intake is low and erratic, the substrate for motivation and calm is low and erratic too.

Mitochondria turn food into ATP, and the brain is the most energy-hungry organ you own. Sluggish cellular energy tends to show up subjectively as low drive rather than as a physical symptom — which is why it gets mistaken for a character flaw.

Peptide signalling sits on top of this foundation, not instead of it. A peptide can nudge a repair pathway; it cannot supply amino acids you never ate.

What the evidence says

Reasonably supported

  • Adequate dietary protein reliably supports neurotransmitter synthesis and satiety.
  • Mitochondrial function is closely linked with fatigue and low mood in a growing body of research.
  • Whole-food dietary patterns are consistently associated with better mental health outcomes in large observational studies.

Still unclear

  • Whether specific peptides meaningfully improve mood in healthy people — human trials are limited.
  • Optimal protein targets for mental wellbeing specifically, as opposed to muscle or general health.
  • How much of the diet-and-mood association is causal rather than shared lifestyle factors.
