Whether you’re a young person opening up to a parent or an adult checking in on a friend, starting the conversation is often the hardest part.
Pick a time when you both have space and aren’t rushed. A walk or car ride can make eye contact feel less intense.
Say “I’ve been feeling overwhelmed lately” rather than “You never listen.” This keeps the focus on your experience and lowers defensiveness.
You’re not looking for a perfect solution. You’re looking for connection. Simply being heard can lighten the load significantly.
