Many of us speak to ourselves in ways we would never speak to a friend. Learning to turn that voice toward kindness is a powerful mental-health skill.

Notice the inner critic

You don’t have to believe every thought you have. When a harsh thought appears, label it: “That’s my inner critic.” This creates a little distance.

Ask: what would I say to a friend?

Imagine someone you care about is going through the same thing. Offer yourself the same understanding. You deserve it, too.

Practice a self-compassion break

  • This is a moment of suffering.
  • Suffering is part of being human.
  • May I be kind to myself right now.
