A guide for adults who want to show up well for the youth in their lives.

Adults often worry about saying the wrong thing. The truth is, your presence matters more than your perfect words.
Resist the urge to immediately solve the problem. Ask open questions like “What’s that like for you?” and let them share at their own pace.
Even if their reaction seems outsized to you, their feelings are real. Saying “That sounds really hard” can be deeply supportive.
If a young person is withdrawn for weeks, expressing hopelessness, or showing signs of self-harm, reach out to a mental-health professional or crisis service promptly.
