Humanin

The first mitochondrial-derived peptide discovered, identified through its ability to protect neurons from amyloid-beta toxicity.

How it works

Humanin was found in a screen of surviving neurons in Alzheimer's-affected brain tissue. It is cytoprotective, suppressing apoptosis through interaction with Bax and through a receptor complex involving gp130. Circulating levels fall with age, and higher levels have been observed in the offspring of centenarians.

Humanin rises with metabolic stress — exercise and caloric restriction both raise endogenous levels. As with MOTS-c, the behaviours that trigger the signal are better evidenced than injecting the signal.
