When your body reads the world as unsafe, everything narrows: attention, patience, generosity, and the gap between an urge and acting on it. Willpower is a poor tool for widening that gap. Physiology is a good one.

Why it changes how you feel

A long exhale activates the parasympathetic branch through the vagus nerve. That is why slow breathing lowers heart rate within a minute or two — it is a direct physiological lever, not a metaphor.

Heart-rate variability tracks how flexibly your system can move between alertness and calm. Higher flexibility is consistently associated with better emotional regulation.

Craving is a wave with a shape: it rises, peaks and falls, usually inside a few minutes. Regulation buys you the time to let it pass instead of acting at the peak.
